Blue Forest Unpolished Petrified Hardwood Slab | Eden Valley | Wyoming
Schinoxylon sp.
Eocene (~52-50 million year ago)
Green River Formation
Eden Valley, Sweetwater County, Wyoming
Slab approx. dimensions: 5.75" x 4.25" x 0.625"
This Petrified agatized wood with chalcedony was collected on private land near Eden Valley in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. It has a natural unpolished matte finish. Adhesive reinforcement has been applied to stabilize this specimen, preserving its natural integrity while ensuring structural durability.
Blue Forest Petrified Wood formed when ancient trees from Eocene lake margins were buried and replaced by silica-rich groundwater. Over time, quartz and chalcedony preserved the wood’s cellular structure in vivid detail. Unique to this locality, many specimens are coated with blue and white chalcedony or opal, often resembling coral. The blue tones result from light scattering within microcrystalline silica and trace mineral impurities.
These fossils record the lush, subtropical forests that once surrounded the Green River lakes and reveal the mineral-rich, alkaline conditions that helped create one of the world’s most visually striking petrified woods.
