Desert rose is a commonly used term for crystal clusters of gypsum or baryte that resemble the shape of a rose and contain large amounts of sand grains. The individual crystal 'petals' are flattened on the crystallographic axis, creating a fan-like appearance in radiating clusters.
The rosette crystal habit typically arises in dry, sandy settings, such as the evaporation of a shallow salt basin. The crystals adopt a circular pattern of flat plates, resulting in a shape resembling that of a rose blossom. Gypsum roses often exhibit more distinct, sharper edges compared to baryte roses. Other bladed evaporite minerals, such as celestine, can also form clusters of rosettes. These blooms can range in size from pea to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter.
The sand in the crystal structure is influenced by the surrounding environment and may also cover the crystals. The presence of iron oxides can alter the color of the rosettes to a rusty hue.
