Las Choyas geodes, often referred to as coconut geodes, are mined near Chihuahua, Mexico. Shafts are drilled down 100 to 200 feet below the surface to the geode bearing white clay. Tunnels are then dug horizontally to extract the geodes.

Geodes are hollow voids in rocks filled with crystals and other minerals. They are typically formed inside of hollow cavities created by air bubbles inside of volcanic rock. Over time, tiny crystals are deposited onto the sides of the cavity by mineral rich water that has seeped into the rock. After millions of years, the flow of water gradually grows the crystals inside the hollow void.

Most geodes contain a variety of quartz ranging from clear to smoky to more rarely amethyst. Secondary minerals such as goethite, hematite, mordenite, calcite, and galena may also be present in some geodes.
