Spider fossils are exceptionally rare to find in the Green River Formation. Despide spiders having a chitinous exoskeleton, they are relatively soft-bodied and tend to decay faster after death compared to insects. The Thomisidae family is known as crab spiders because their flattened bodies and stout legs resemble crabs. These spiders do not spin webs to catch prey like other species, instead they lie in wait on leaves, plants, or tree bark to ambush their target. There are currently over 3000 identified species of crab spiders living today.
