Purpurite is composed of iron phosphate and manganese, which gives purpurite its color. Its hardness varies between 4 and 4.5. This is one characteristic that sets it apart for similar minerals such as charoite (5-6) and sugilite (6-6.5). Purpurite is the softest of the three minerals. Its name comes from the word "purpura," which is Latin for purple. The purple color may transfer onto hands, but it can easily be washed off.

Purpurite is associated with the Third Eye and Crown chakras. Its deep purple hue stimulates these energy centers, promoting spiritual growth and enhancing intuition. It helps individuals break free from negative habits, encouraging them to embrace the unknown and explore new possibilities.
