The Muonionalusta meteorite is one of the oldest known meteorites on Earth - estimated at about 4.5 billion years old, dating back to the very formation of our solar system. It was discovered in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi in northern Sweden, above the Arctic Circle.
What Makes It Special?
1. Incredible Age
This meteorite formed before Earth fully developed. When you hold a piece of Muonionalusta, you're literally holding material older than our planet’s crust.
2. Widmanstätten Pattern
When cut, polished, and etched with acid, it reveals a stunning crisscross pattern called the Widmanstätten pattern. These geometric nickel-iron bands formed over millions of years as the parent asteroid slowly cooled in space. It’s nearly impossible to fake - a true cosmic fingerprint.
3. Composition
Muonionalusta is classified as a fine octahedrite iron meteorite, composed mainly of:
- Iron
- Nickel
- Trace elements like gallium and germanium
Its structure suggests it originated from the core of a differentiated asteroid that was shattered by ancient collisions.
4. Rare & Highly Collectible
Because it has such a dramatic crystalline structure and stable composition, Muonionalusta is frequently used in:
- High-end watches and jewelry
- Luxury knife handles
- Collector specimens
- Museum displays
