Orthoceras is an extinct genus of straight-shelled cephalopods, related to modern squid and octopus. Its long conical shell was divided into chambers, with a central siphuncle that allowed the animal to control buoyancy. Living in ancient seas, Orthoceras was a swift predator that used jet propulsion and tentacles to capture prey.

Fossils of Orthoceras are commonly found in marine limestone and shale deposits. They are widespread, with notable occurrences in Morocco, North America, Europe, and Asia. Because of their abundance and global distribution, they are important index fossils for dating Paleozoic rocks.

Orthoceras fossils offer insights into early cephalopod evolution and serve as valuable biostratigraphic markers. Frequently sought after in the fossil trade, these specimens are commonly polished for both decorative and educational purposes.
