Howlite is a calcium based mineral that forms as a result of evaporation. It occurs when calcium, boron and silicon are readily available in an aqueous solution that begins to dry up. As the solution dries up, the minerals come together to form crystals. Howlite typically forms in irregular nodules that resemble cauliflower. It is typically white with fine gray, black, or brown veining. Small, translucent crystals of howlite have been reported, however this type of formation is quite rare.

Howlite is commonly used to make decorative objects such as small carvings or jewelry. Because of its porous texture, howlite can be easily dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise because of the similar appearance of the veining patterns. Natural howlite is sometimes sold under trade names such as "white turquoise" and is used to produce jewelry similar to how turquoise is used. White varieties of turquoise are also marketed under similar trade names. These varieties of turquoise are not as hard or durable as howlite, and subsequently require stabilization in order to be used in jewelry. This has led to howlite being more popular for use in jewelry than the artificially stabilized white varieties of turquoise.

Howlite acts as a cleanser of negative energy, mopping up bad vibes, while also aiding in emotional regulation and stress absorption. Serving as a calming stone, howlite soothes the body, mind, and spirit, promoting wisdom, raising awareness, and granting clear vision.
