Denversaurus schlessmani
Cretaceous (~68 MYO)
Lance Creek Formation
Newcastle, WY

Specimen approx.  size: 5" x 4.5" x 1.5"

Nodosaurids were heavily armored, plant-eating dinosaurs that roamed North America during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 125–66 million years ago. Members of the ankylosaur group, these dinosaurs were protected by thick bony plates called osteoderms embedded in their skin. Many species also possessed prominent spikes along their bodies, providing defense against predators.

With broad bodies, short, sturdy legs, and low-slung builds, nodosaurids were well adapted for browsing on low-growing vegetation. Unlike their close relatives, the ankylosaurids, nodosaurids generally lacked a bony tail club. Their formidable armor made them a distinctive part of the Cretaceous ecosystem.

Nodosaurid fossils, including armor plates, spikes, and occasionally remarkably complete skeletons, provide valuable insight into dinosaur anatomy, defense strategies, and the ancient environments of North America.
